Massage Core Relaxation Technique

This is a great example of my Core Relaxation Technique. Notice how I work light to medium, to deep for greater comfort and effectiveness.

The process of using my weight to brace the spine in order to work deep into the muscle of the spine, front and back. I address the deep layers of muscle including the spinal erectors and even psoas. My weight is distributed accross the pelvis, for a deep compression pumping action of the lymph and blood of the lower organs, iliacus, psoas, glutes, shu points along the rib joints, and the pressure points at the sacrum.

The deep portions, especially, the portions which I use my entire weight for compression are absolutely conraindicated for paitients who have severe spinal injuries in the acute stage or for persons with fragile skeletons.

The technique is absolutely indicated for those who have large dense muscles, strong bones, and stress in the glutes and lower back.

The roots of this technique are from Eastern modalities, such as Thai massage, and are rooted in a depth of knowledge of anatomy Check out my website www.austintherapeuticmassage.com for more from me.

Male Massage Therapists or Female Massage Therapists

Ref: http://spas.about.com/od/spaetiquettebasics/a/malevsfemale.htm

Deciding whether you want a male or female massage therapist is one of the first questions you're faced when you get a massage.

When you make an appointment, the receptionist generally asks if you have a preference for male or female massage therapists. There are more female massage therapists in the business, and both men AND women tend to prefer women. Some of the reasons people prefer female massage therapists include:

  • People feel vulnerable when they're nude, and want to feel safe.
  • Women believe male massage therapists will be judging their bodies.
  • People are worried the massage will be sexualized with male massage therapists. Men are afraid male massage therapists are gay....and women are worried they aren't!
  • Many hetereosexual men find a woman's touch pleasant -- even when it's not sexual -- and find it easier to relax.

Massage therapists are trained to respect boundaries and use proper draping techniques, so these issues shouldn't be a problem. But since male massage therapists aren't as popular, anyone who doesn't state a preference will likely get booked with a male.

More experienced spa-goers often don't care whether massage therapists are male or female. They're comfortable with the routine, and know the most important factor is skill, not gender.

Some experienced spa-goers actually prefer male massage therapists. Male massage therapists often have more strength, which can be helpful with deep tissue massage And gay men, who are big spa-goers, tend to prefer male massage therapists.

Whether you prefer male or female massage therapists, feel free to state it up front. It's your massage, and you should enjoy it.

Back massage : Singapore Spa

A good back massage can relieve pain, anxiety, and stress, as well as increase physical intimacy, if desired. The following techniques will help you learn how to give a good back massage. Finding a volunteer to practice on shouldn't be too hard!

Setting Up

  1. Place a pillow or cushion where the person's chest will be.
  2. Spread the sheet over to catch any excess oil.
  3. Have the person prepare by loosening or removing their pants (so that the lower back can be reached) and taking off their top. If privacy is a concern, step out of the room and have them wrap a towel around their chest (just underneath the arms) so that the ends are at the back.
  4. Have them lie face down, with the pillow underneath the breast bone.
  5. Fold one of the towels and place it underneath the forehead to keep the person's neck straight.
  6. Fold one of the towels and place it underneath the ankles to support the person's lower back.
  7. If the person is wearing a towel around their chest, unfold the ends to expose the back.
  8. If the person is wearing pants, spread another towel over them and tuck the towel into the waistline to prevent the oil from staining them.

The Massage

  1. Tell the person you are about to begin, and to let you know if anything you are doing is painful or uncomfortable.
  2. Place massage oil in a cupped hand, and warm it by rubbing it between your hands.
  3. Spread the oil around the person's back with light strokes. Don't forget the shoulders and neck area.
  4. Palm circles. Place one hand on the lower back and put your other hand over it. With arms extended, begin making small circles, going up the back and down again. Staying on one side of the spine, repeat 2-3 times.
    • The movement should come from the waist, rather than from the shoulders.
  5. Muscle lifting. Move up and down the back, 2-3 times. It'll take some practice for this to become a smooth, confident rhythm:
    • Make one hand into a "lobster claw" or "L" shape.
    • Move your hand in the direction of your thumb, applying pressure and gradually closing the gap between your thumb and forefinger.
    • As you finish the stroke, twist the wrist to achieve a lifting motion on the muscle. As you bring your thumb and forefinger together, the outside of your hand (along the little finger) should be running along the back.
    • Keep alternating hands with a windshield wiper type of motion.
  6. Knuckling. Repeat 2-3 times. Do not apply pressure on the lower back, and remember to avoid the spine.
    • Form the hands into loose fists. With your arms straight and your knuckles and fingers in contact with the back, slide up and continue up and over the shoulders.
    • Then lightly drag the knuckles back.
  7. On the last knuckling, instead of coming back down, you can use muscle lifting on the trapezius, which is the muscle that connects the neck to the shoulders. Continue rubbing as you move around the head.
  8. Repeat the palm circles, muscle lifting, and knuckling on the other side of the back.
  9. Stand above the head. Use an extended thumb to make upward strokes between the shoulder blade and the backbone (from the hips, towards the head). As one thumb slides off, the other one begins its stroke upwards.
    • Gradually move over and continue on the other side. Do not do this directly on the spine.
  10. Bring both thumbs to the upper back, on either side of the spine.
    • With constant pressure, slowly begin to slide your thumbs down the back. Remember to be careful over the lower back, where there are no ribs protecting internal organs.
    • When you reach the top of the hips, allow your thumbs to linger there with steady pressure before beginning a new stroke.
    • Slide the hands back up and repeat two more times, each time moving a bit farther to the sides (away from the spine).
  11. Twists. Come back around to the person's side. Reach around the far hip with one hand, while the other hand rests on the near hip. With a fluid motion, pull one hand towards you as the other one pushes away; in the middle, they should slide against each other, in opposite directions. Repeat this stroke up the back until you reach the shoulder area, then come back down. Repeat 3 times.
  12. Spread the fingers of both hands. Draw the fingertips of one hand down the back, lifting off at the top of the hips as the other hand begins at the shoulders. Repeat several times, and slowly allow the pressure to lighten until your hands float off.

Thai massage

Thai massage

Ref: http://altmedicine.about.com/od/treatmentsmtoq/a/Thai_Massage.htm

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage is believed to have been developed by Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, physician to Buddha, more than 2,500 years ago in India.

It made its way to Thailand, where the Ayurvedic techniques and principles gradually became influenced by traditional Chinese medicine.

For centuries, Thai massage was performed by monks as one component of Thai medicine.

What does Thai massage feel like?

Thai massage is more energizing and rigorous than more classic forms of massage.

Thai massage is also called Thai yoga massage, because the therapist uses his or her hands, knees, legs, and feet to move you into a series of yoga-like stretches. Many people say Thai massage is like doing yoga without any work.

Muscle compression, joint mobilization, and acupressure are also used during treatment.

People describe Thai massage as both relaxing and energizing.

What should I expect during my visit?

Thai massage is usually done on a padded mat on the floor.

No oil is applied, so you are fully dressed. You are usually asked to bring or wear comfortable clothing to the massage.

A typical Thai massage is 60 minutes to two hours long.

What conditions is Thai massage used for?

Many people find that Thai massage has the following benefits:
  • relaxes
  • reduces stress
  • improves circulation
  • increases energy
  • increases flexibility
  • improves range of motion
  • centers the mind and body

Precautions

Massage is not recommended for certain people:
  • infectious skin disease, rash, or open wounds
  • immediately after surgery
  • immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor
  • prone to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before having a massage
  • pregnant women should check with their doctor first if they are considering getting a massage. Massage in pregnant women should be done by massage therapists who are certified in pregnancy massage.
  • massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed skin, unhealed wounds, tumors, abdominal hernia, or areas of recent fractures.

Additional tips

  • Don’t eat a heavy meal before the massage
  • If it's your first time at the clinic or spa, arrive at least 10 minutes early to complete the necessary forms. Otherwise, arrive 5 minutes early so you can have a few minutes to rest and relax before starting the massage.
  • Be sure that your massage therapist has your complete health history, because people with certain conditions should not have Thai massage.
  • If you feel discomfort at any time, let your massage therapist know.

Jin Shin Jyutsu : art of living

Jin Shin Jyutsu

Ref: http://www.balanceflow.com/BAjinshinjyutsu.htm

Officially known as Jin Shin Jyutsu® Physio-Philosophy, this practice is a disarmingly simple style of acupressure. It works with a set of 26 points (called Safety Energy Locks or SELs) along energy pathways. When a pathway becomes blocked, energy stagnates. This initially affects the local area of stagnation, but has the potential to create imbalance along the entire pathway. The 26 Energy Locks are the locations on the body where energy tends to become stuck. (Acupressurists and acupuncturists, by comparison, learn over 300 points.)
Mountains and Sea

A Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner uses both hands (referred to as "jumper cables") to hold a combination of SELs. The very simplicity and gentleness of the process allow clients to relax and receive the work. As the SELs release and balance is restored, the client experiences physical, mental, and spiritual harmony.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is actually an ancient healing practice. Master Jiro Murai, a Japanese healer and philosopher, rediscovered it in the early 20th century. Murai was led to Jin Shin Jyutsu in response to his own health problems. In his youth he was known for his reckless, overindulgent nature, entering (and winning!) contests that involved consuming immense quantities of food and drink. At the age of 26, he became seriously ill and doctors diagnosed his condition as incurable and terminal.

Murai asked to be left alone in his family's mountain cabin. As he passed in and out of consciousness, he had visions of spiritual masters using hand mudras, which he began to practice on himself. On the seventh day he underwent an intense healing experience. He vowed to devote his life to discovering the connection between the hand mudras and his dramatic recovery.

Murai looked for clues in the Bible and also studied extensively in ancient Chinese, Greek, and Indian texts. He practiced his healing techniques on the homeless in Tokyo, where he developed a reputation as an extraordinary healer. In the story I've heard, the brother of Japan's Emperor (Hirohito) was suffering from an ailment that doctors had been unable to cure. Murai was asked to treat the Emperor's brother and had great success. In gratitude, the Emperor asked Murai what he would like in return. Murai asked for access to ancient records (the Kojiki) in the Archives of the Imperial Palace. It was these writings that provided information on the origins, philosophy, and techniques of Jin Shin Jyutsu.

According to these records, Jin Shin Jyutsu was widely known in antiquity -- before the time of Buddha, Moses, and the Kojiki (712 AD). The practice was handed down orally from generation to generation, but had virtually disappeared by the 20th century. Using all the information he had uncovered, Murai conducted extensive experiments on himself for over 50 years. He found that Jin Shin Jyutsu produced a depth of awareness that went beyond anything described in the ancient texts of Chinese medicine.

Mary Burmeister, a Japanese American, met Murai in Japan in the late 1940's and became his student. Burmeister's explanation for the depth and power of Jin Shin Jyutsu is that it affects the attitudes that lie beneath our symptoms, not just the symptoms themselves.

The belief that we can help ourselves through a process of knowing ourselves is integral to Jin Shin Jyutsu. At its heart, the work embodies a life of simplicity, calmness, patience, and self-containment. Practitioners of the work regard Jin Shin Jyutsu not simply as a style of bodywork, but as a philosophy of life. Ultimately it is the philosophy and spirit of the work, not the technique, that attracts clients and practitioners to Jin Shin Jyutsu.

People often learn of Jin Shin Jyutsu by word of mouth, when someone who's had a positive and dramatic experience of the work recommends it to a friend. It's often used as a complement to conventional healing methods. One of its great advantages is that one can easily learn simple self-help techniques that supplement sessions from a practitioner.

Mary Burmeister, who returned to the United States in the 1950's, and who has devoted her life to Jin Shin Jyutsu, did not believe in promoting her work as a business. Although she never advertised her courses or her private practice, she attracted students from around the world and had a waiting list of over a year for private sessions. Today Jin Shin Jyutsu is taught worldwide. An intensive series of sessions from close associates of Mary Burmeister is available in Scottsdale, AZ (see the official Jin Shin Jyutsu site for more information).

The translation of Jin Shin Jyutsu is "The Art of the Creator through Compassionate Man." The Jin Shin Jyutsu Foundation sponsors projects offering free Jin Shin Jyutsu sessions for children with "deep needs" and their families, for hospice residents and their families, and free self-help classes for international communities that are isolated, have insufficient medical facilities, or are in financial distress.

Spend Valentine's Day Alone

Valentine's Day

Ref: http://www.askmen.com/money/how_to/37_how_to.html

While all your friends complain about having to buy gifts for their girlfriends (or about having no gift ideas in mind) on Valentine's Day, do you wish you had someone to buy gifts for -- or at least someone to buy gifts for you? Yes, Valentine's Day is the day of love, romance and passion, but that doesn't mean that you don't deserve to make the day memorable.

Even if you won't be receiving chocolates or other goodies, there are plenty of ways to spend Valentine's Day if you're single and still want to have a good time. You don't have to resort to calling an ex-girlfriend to feel "normal" on this day (and if you do call her, you'll likely end up with booty-call remorse). Use this day for lovers to treat yourself to something good, and AskMen.com is here to tell you how to spend Valentine's Day alone.

Treat yourself

Go to a spa, get a massage or check out the new restaurant you've always wanted to try. Sure, the latter suggestion leaves images of a dude sitting like a loser all by himself in a restaurant, but invite some friends and you're sure to have a good time. Get yourself that Gucci shirt you've seen on display for weeks or purchase the cool mags for your car -- treat yourself like gold. No matter what you do as you spend Valentine's Day alone, do what you enjoy doing most and feel good about yourself.

Have a party

Invite all your single friends or those whose dates are unavailable, and have a bash at your bachelor pad. Get some cocktails, appetizers and music going and make the night memorable by taking it easy with your close friends. This is a great option if you don't want to spend Valentine's Day alone.

Go to a party

If you're invited to a party, then go -- with or without a date. No one said that you couldn't participate in Valentine's Day activities if you don't have a Valentine. Who knows, you may leave the party with a "momentary" sweetheart.

Veg out

If you've had a hard day at work and just feel like kicking back and lounging at home, then bring home your favorite meal, watch TV and rent those movies that you've always wanted to watch but never had the chance to. The point is to do whatever you want as you spend Valentine's Day alone, and thank your lucky stars you have the remote all to yourself (although no woman would stand a chance anyway).

There's lots more you can do if you're going to spend Valentine's Day alone...

Tear it up with your buds

Gather up your other unattached friends and have a blast. Go out for drinks, shoot some pool and then cap the night off with some more great manly drinks, music and dirty jokes. Whoever said you need a woman to have fun?

Treat a friend

It takes a pretty big man to let go of his ego and follow through with this tip, so big it up. Valentine's Day is about love and thanks, but it's not necessarily limited to a girlfriend. Go out of your way and do something nice to show your appreciation for a friend, a family member or a coworker who has really been there for you.

Hang out with your favorite female

Spend quality time with the female friend that you feel closest to. Who knows, maybe a night of two lonely souls might lead to more interesting casual encounters. However, be careful when entering this territory with a female friend, as there are a number of pros and cons of casual sex between friends.

Do the usual

Go about your routine, and it'll feel like just another regular day. Go to work, hit the gym, go home, and enjoy your dinner in front of some quality TV. You'll fall asleep, it'll be the 15th of February, and nothing will have changed (except for your abs that are really starting to show thanks to your workout).

make it your day

Valentine's Day is really no different from any other day, and it's simply another commercial holiday. But if you don't want to spend the next Valentine's Day alone, then think about how to avoid becoming an eternal bachelor -- although it's a great life, isn't it?

Get more gift picks, date ideas and relationship advice in our Valentine's Day Guide.

Japanese Massage : Shiatsu Massage 指圧

Shiatsu Masage

Ref: http://www.balanceflow.com/BAshiatsu.htm

Shiatsu was developed in Japan, and while it's been influenced by a variety of healing practices and martial arts of Asia, including those of China, India, and Tibet, it makes a distinctly Japanese contribution to Asian bodywork. Shiatsu combines Japanese Anma massage, Ampuku abdominal massage, and Do-In therapeutic exercise techniques with insights from Western anatomy and physical therapy. Historically Japan was more actively engaged with the West than other Asian countries and thus more open to Western ideas.

Like other forms of Asian bodywork, Shiatsu is based on the principles of Chinese medicine and is designed to restore the flow of energy in the body. It's known especially for its use of rhythmic pressure along energy channels. Practitioners lean their own body weight into the recipient's body to improve energy flow and the circulation of blood and lymph.

The history of Shiatsu goes back to the 7th century AD, when a delegation of students was sent from Japan to China to study Chinese medicine and culture. Martial arts students, who frequently need to treat injuries or to revive an unconscious sparring partner, especially valued the knowledge they brought back.

Although Shiatsu traces its origins back to this earlier time, it acquired its unique characteristics only in the last century. It was during this time that Japan was more open to Western ideas than China, and there were two historical events in particular that shaped the development of Shiatsu.

The Japanese had been practicing their own style of Anma massage (similar to Tui Na) since the Edo Period (1602-1868). Around 1900, the government established licensing laws for practicing Anma. In part, this was a response to the increasing influence of scientifically based Western medicine, which the government hoped to encourage by these laws. There may also have been a desire to control Anma practitioners who had strayed into providing questionable forms of relaxation rather than therapeutic massage. In response to the new licensing laws, legitimate Anma practitioners began to call their work Shiatsu (which means "finger pressure") and to emphasize the therapeutic benefits.

Following WWII, General Douglas MacArthur banned the practice of all traditional therapies in Japan, including acupuncture, moxibustion (burning mugwort on acupoints), and Shiatsu. Massage -- including Shiatsu -- was traditionally practiced by the blind in Japan, since it provided them with a livelihood, and their touch was considered especially sensitive. Shiatsu was eventually saved from the ban against traditional therapies when the Japanese Blind Association contacted Helen Keller. She petitioned President Truman, who overturned MacArther's ban.

The threat to their livelihood motivated Shiatsu practitioners to downplay the origins of their work in traditional Chinese medicine. They increasingly described their work in Western medical terms and incorporated chiropractic and physical therapy techniques. These developments have led to the distinctive Shiatsu style we know today and also account for the variety of styles currently available.

There are three main styles or theoretical schools, each identified with an individual who provided the original distinctive focus: Namikoshi (Nippon style), Masunaga (Zen Shiatsu), and Serizawa (Acupressure Shiatsu).

Namikoshi's style of Shiatsu is the one most often found in Japan. It places more emphasis on points than on energy channels, works the whole body (including stretches), and can be quite vigorous. Tokujiro Namikoshi established the Shiatsu Institute of Therapy in Hokkaido as early as 1925. He also founded the Japan Shiatsu Institute in 1940. He was concerned with the legal recognition of Shiatsu in Japan, which may account for his emphasis on Western medical theories. In addition to points, the emphasis of Nippon style Shiatsu is on the anatomical structure of the body -- the muscles and bones -- and the nervous system.

Shizuto Masunaga reintroduced the more traditional roots of Shiatsu, including energy meridians and Five Element theory. Masunaga, who was born into a family of Shiatsu practitioners, was interested in western psychology. He became a professor of psychology at Tokyo University and also taught psychology at Namikoshi's Shiatsu school. In addition to valuing Chinese medicine, he was very interested in emotional, psychological, and spiritual development. This led to his creation of Zen Shiatsu.

Practitioners of Zen Shiatsu strive to maintain a meditative, intuitive state, allowing them to connect deeply with their clients and to detect changes in the body during the session. Zen Shiatsu practitioners see Shiatsu as a means of personal development, giving meaning and purpose to life, both for the client and the practitioner.

Katsusuke Serizawa, a student of physical therapy, Shiatsu, and Chinese medicine, was especially interested in a scientific explanation of the energy meridians. The focus of his studies was on acupoints or (as they're called in Japanese) Tsubos. His research and extensive publications emphasize the change in electrical resistance of the skin over a tsubo point. He was especially interested in demonstrating the therapeutic benefits of Shiatsu in terms that were acceptable to modern scientific thinking. The western form of Serizawa's Tsubo Therapy is called Acupressure Shiatsu and is not as widely known as Nippon and Zen styles.

Shiatsu first began to attract Western interest in the 1970's, following President Nixon's visit to China. Japanese friends tell me that in Japan Shiatsu is popular only with older people, but in the West -- both the US and Europe -- Shiatsu is probably the most well-known style of Asian bodywork and is popular with all ages. One other difference between Shiatsu in Japan and in the West is that it's become traditional in the West to practice Shiatsu on the floor, whereas this is rarely the case in Japan.

Cosplay

Cosplay

Cosplay

Cosplay

Cosplay (コスプレ, kosupure?), short for "costume play", is a type of performance art in which participants don costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea. Characters are often drawn from popular fiction in Japan, but recent trends have included American cartoons and Sci-Fi as well as other pop-culture. Favorite sources include manga, anime, tokusatsu, comic books, graphic novels, video games, hentai and fantasy movies. Any entity from the real or virtual world that lends itself to dramatic interpretation may be taken up as a subject. Inanimate objects are given anthropomorphic forms and it is not unusual to see genders switched, with women playing male roles and vice versa.

Cosplayers often interact to create a subculture centered around role play. A broader use of the term cosplay applies it to any costumed role play in venues apart from the stage, regardless of the cultural context.

Massage : Tui Na

Massage : Tui Na

Ref: www.balanceflow.com/BAtuina.htm

To those who've experienced both acupressure and Shiatsu, a Tui Na session may seem like a cross between the two. Like Shiatsu, Tui Na uses rhythmic compression along energy channels of the body, as well as a variety of techniques that manipulate and lubricate the joints. Like acupressure, Tui Na directly affects the flow of energy by holding and pressing the body at acupressure points.

To a Westerner, Tui Na is the form of Asian bodywork most closely resembling conventional western massage. Many of the techniques are similar -- gliding (known as effleurage or Tui), kneading (petrissage or Nie), percussion (tapotement or Da), friction, pulling, rotation, rocking, vibration, and shaking. Despite the similarities, the intent of Tui Na is more specifically therapeutic than the simple relaxation of a Swedish-style massage. (See Tui Na Massage: Rebalancing Your Energy.)

One of Tui Na's advantages over simple massage is its ability to focus on specific problems, especially chronic pain associated with the muscles, joints, and skeletal system. It's especially effective for joint pain (such as arthritis), sciatica, muscle spasms, and pain in the back, neck, and shoulders. It also helps chronic conditions such as insomnia, constipation, headaches (including migraines), and the tension associated with stress.

Tui Na does not simply work on the muscles, bones, and joints. It works with the energy of the body at a deeper level. As the practitioner senses the client's body with her hands, she is able to assess the distribution of energy and affect its flow.

As with other styles of Asian bodywork, Tui Na is designed to prevent problems, not just correct them. By keeping the body's energy in balance, health is maintained. This is true not just for physical health, but for mental and emotional well-being as well.

Tui Na, which dates back to 1700 BC, is the parent of most modern Asian bodywork forms. Like all forms of Chinese Medicine -- indeed all forms of traditional Chinese culture -- the practice of Tui Na in China suffered during the political and social upheavals of the 20th century. In 1929, the Chinese government instituted a policy eliminating the "old" medicine. In 1936, Chinese Medicine was denounced as having no scientific foundation and its practice was banned.

Tui Na survived as a popular form of healing among the general Chinese population, who have long practiced Anmo. Anmo is the general term for massage in Chinese, whereas Tui Na is a more specialized term indicating practices based on the theories of Chinese medicine.

After the Communist Revolution in 1949, the policy against traditional medicine changed, and the tradition of Chinese medicine was encouraged. There were further setbacks, however, during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960's and 70's.

The style of Tui Na practiced in China today is closer to the work of chiropractors, osteopaths, and physical therapists than to that of massage therapists. It's taught as a separate but equal field of study in schools of Traditional Chinese Medicine, requiring the same level of training as acupuncturists and herbalists.

As Tui Na has migrated to the West and become popular, the style of work has been modified. Most western trained Tui Na practitioners do not do "bone setting," as do their counterparts in China. Western style Tui Na can be thought of as a therapeutic extension of western massage, with an emphasis on restoring and balancing energy.
